Author Readings Presented by The Seattle Public Library in October

The Seattle Public Library will feature writers and their work at several locations throughout Seattle in October.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Seattle Urban Book Expo: Author Showcase - 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Authors featured at the fourth annual Seattle Urban Book Expo will share selected chapters and/or spoken word and their personal stories. Enjoy music and live painting, and learn a bit more about how Seattle Urban Book Expo is contributing to Seattle’s community. Speakers will include: Rosa Nicole Booker, Marcia Tate Arunga, Martine Kalaw and Nikkita Oliver with Joye Hardiman as moderator.
Jeff Smoot - 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 35th Ave. S.W., 206-684-7455. Join us as we welcome climbing author Smoot, who will be sharing stories and images from his new memoir "Hangdog Days: Conflict, Change, and the Race for 5.14," which chronicles the era when rock climbing exploded in popularity. This program is part of the Words, Writers & Southwest Stories series which features writers connected to the Duwamish Peninsula and Puget Sound. It is presented in partnership with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.
2019 Washington State Book Awards - 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. The Washington State Book Awards celebrate books that exemplify the best writing in our state. Hear from award-winning authors at this annual event!
Paula Becker - 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Ballard Branch, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W., 206-684-4089. Local author Becker will read from and discuss her latest book, "A House on Stilts," a personal account of how her family has struggled with America's opioid crisis.
Aarti Shahani - 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. NPR correspondent Shahani uses her family's immigration story in her book "Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares" to unpack the deep schism of American culture—where the "deserving" are deified and the "undeserving" are demonized.
Knute Berger & B.J. Bullert - 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Join us for an evening of memories, insights and revelations about the Space Needle featuring author Knute Berger and filmmaker B.J. Bullert. They will offer singular and unique perspectives on the monument and share stories and experiences of a landmark that continues to be an icon for the city of Seattle. This program is being held in conjunction with the exhibit The Space Needle: A 21st Century View at the Central Library's 8th Floor Gallery, October 7-27.
Jeanette Winterson - 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Winterson will read from and discuss her latest book "Frankissstein," an audacious love story that weaves together disparate lives into an exploration of transhumanism, artificial intelligence, and queer love.
Spirited Stone: Lessons from Kubota’s Garden - 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Come celebrate the first book of poetry about Fujitaro Kubota and garden in Rainier Beach named after him.
Taste of Iceland: First Lady Eliza Reid - 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Celebrate Iceland's storytelling tradition with a talk by Iceland's First Lady Eliza Reid. In addition to being first lady, Reid is also a Reykjavik-based writer and editor who co-founded the Iceland Writers Retreat. After an introduction to Iceland’s literary traditions, Reid will appear in conversation with Juan Carlos Reyes to talk about her latest book, "The Write Stuff.
Loreen Lee - 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Lake City Branch, 12501 28th Ave. N.E., 206-684-7518. Local author Lee will read from and discuss "The Lava Never Sleeps: A Honolulu Memoir," which details her struggle growing up in a traditional Chinese family in Honolulu, Hawai’i during the 1950s and 1960s, enduring both emotional and physical abuse.
"We Are Puget Sound" - 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Join us for an evening celebrating a new multimedia book and campaign "We Are Puget Sound: Discovering and Recovering the Salish Sea to protect and restore Puget Sound." Join book contributors Mindy Roberts from Washington Environmental Council, writer David Workman and photographer Brian Walsh for a stunning visual journey through the complex web of marine and terrestrial wildlife, regional economies of fishing and agriculture, and through the lives of the people who call this place home. Also joining the event will be Sally Brownfield, educational advocate with the Squaxin tribe, and Darcie Larson from the Seattle Aquarium for a panel discussion and Q&A.
