Lake Washington Ship Canal Centennial: Exhibit and Talk at The Seattle Public Library May 13

On Saturday, May 13, the Fremont Branch of The Seattle Public Library and the Fremont Historical Society will co-host a display commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Local historian Jennifer Ott will also present a talk on the building of the canal.
The exhibit will have a reception from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at the Fremont Branch, 731 N. 35th St., 206-684-4084 . The presentation by Jennifer Ott will begin at 1 p.m.
Library programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Metered street parking is available near the branch, and there is a pay parking lot across the street.
The display will include historical photos, maps and documents commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
For her presentation, Ott will share some of the stories she and her co-author, David B. Williams, uncovered in their research for "Waterway: The Story of Seattle's Locks and Ship Canal." The talk will cover the decades of false starts and political shenanigans -- as well as the far-reaching social, economic and environmental impacts -- of the ship canal's construction and operation.
This display is presented by the Fremont Historical Society in honor of National Preservation Month. The Fremont Historical Society is dedicated to building awareness and appreciation of the history of the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle.
