Help shape future technology services at The Seattle Public Library by attending a  Community Conversation and tech fair with City Librarian Marcellus Turner from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at the 2100 Building, 2100 24th Ave. S.  Free on street parking is available. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. Refreshments will be provided. The event is co-sponsored with Geekwire.

Turner will kick off the conversation with a brief review of the Library's current technology initiatives and listening to the public's needs and expectations around future technology services.

A tech fair will follow the community discussion, with drop-in sessions on digital literacy efforts, including the Library's popular Wi-Fi hotspot lending program, 3-D printing, panel discussions for business startups and more. Some of the Library's community technology partners will host information tables.

Throughout the event, Library staff members will be available to demonstrate and provide information on the Library's many online resources, such as downloadable e-books, movies and music, as well as sign people up for Library cards.

Time for networking is also planned.

Morning Tech Fair
11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Attend any one of the three sessions:
Digital Access and Equity

Hear what's happening with the city's Digital Equity Initiative and the Library's Wi-Fi hotspot initiative to reach underserved communities. Presenters include: Vicky Yuki, Seattle Information Technology Department, Phillippia Goldsmith, Seattle Housing Authority NewHolly and Toby Thomas, The Seattle Public Library.

Digital Media Learning: Intro to 3-D Printing - Experience 3-D printing and design in this hands-on workshop. Download a design other designers have created from Thingiverse, or create your own object using the free, browser-based software Tinkercad. Library staff members will help participants learn the basics of 3-D design and assist with printing projects. All ages are welcome. Printing projects take from 20 to 30 minutes. The Library will accommodate as many printings as possible within the workshop time. This session is presented by Juan Rubio, The Seattle Public Library.

Support for Entrepreneurs - Learn about resources and support for entrepreneurs and small businesses offered by the Library and community partners. Panelists include: Beto Yarce, Ventures; Joe Sky-Tucker, Business Impact NW; Che Wong, Mercy Corps; and Hal Brookins, SCORE. Moderator: Jay Lyman, The Seattle Public Library.

Afternoon Tech Fair

Digital Literacy Education - Learn more about the Somali Family Safety Task Force's digital literacy education program (taught in Somali)and its impact on students. Presenters include: Farhiya Mohamed, Somali Family Safety Task Force; Ayan Adem and Toby Thomas from The Seattle Public Library; and student program participants.

The Technology and Access Community Conversation is part of a series of community discussions Turner is having on five service priorities that are guiding the future of the Library. The series has included a conversation about Youth and Family Learning, as well as Community Engagement, Re-imagined Library Spaces and Seattle Culture and History.
